Martin was appointed as deputy consul general in Chicago in April 2015. Prior to arriving in Chicago, Martin worked at the British Embassy in The Hague as representative to the organisation for the prohibition of chemical weapons, with a focus on the Syrian chemical weapon disarmament programme. Prior to his appointment in The Hague, Martin served as head of the trade and investment team in Sao Paulo, Brazil from 2010 to 2014. His role involved leading the team which helped British companies find opportunities in Brazil. Earlier in his career Martin worked in London, firstly on the Gibraltar desk, and then on climate change issues. Prior to joining the FCO, Martin served in the British army for two years and worked in the private sector in Italy and Greece.
